Preppy Style: What is it and How Did it Take Over so Quick?

Styles that include "preppy" staples have been around forever, but how did preppy style establish its place in fashion?

"Preppy style" has been around forever. Whether you think of it as Lily Pulitzer dresses and Vera Bradley backpacks or LoveShackFancy and Golden Gooses, it all qualifies. Over the years, the view on preppy style has changed, and it has shifted away from what it used to be.

How did it gain its popularity?

I have been on social media for most of my life. As a teenager in 2020, social media is where you get to express yourself. A huge part of social media in this age is what you wear and your fashion choices. Trends spread like a wildfire on social media, one person does something and everyone else does the same. From what I have seen over the part year, "preppy style" has began to progress over the past year through VSCO. That is when I started to discover Instagram accounts with similar style. Sooner then later the style took storm, everywhere I looked people were buying Golden Gooses, LoveShackFancy, Roller Rabbit and so many more "preppy staples" that have been around for years, but just recently categorized together creating a style. As VSCO and Instagram accounts that posted preppy styles got bigger and even TikTok accounts dedicated to preppy styles gained, that's when I truly realized this was a trend that was here to stay and was going to continue to progress.

Where do I fall?

If there was a spectrum of "preppy style" I think I would fall right in the middle between extreme, and not at all. Honestly, I hate style labels. This might not be how everyone views it, but I don't think it's truly possible to have one style. Most people have pieces in their closet that don't fit the one style you may mostly fall into the category of. Style is yours to choose and I think that if you see a piece you like, you should never shy away from it because it maybe doesn't fit the one particular style you are trying to aim for.

I wear anything that makes me feel confident. When I dress up in an outfit that I work hard on or I planned out for a while, wearing the clothing makes it feel so much more special. Fashion and style is a hard concept because no one style is 100% unique, everyone gets inspiration from others especially with the day and age we live in. It's almost impossible to not see what others are wearing, even more in my case, I run a style account! But with that being said, getting inspiration from others and creating a style that is also your own is what makes it so much cooler.
